Steel roofing on the beach
Prestigious Perth home builder, Oswald Homes, has incorporated shapes suggested by the unusual cantilevered rock formations found in the surrounding area to create a unique home in North Beach.
“We made a decision some years ago to cater solely to the more discerning home buyer,” Oswald Homes General Manager, Roger Piggott says.
“Our philosophy is based on providing high-quality design, careful construction, an uncompromising attention to detail and a level of customer service that is second to none.”
All this and more is exemplified in the North Beach house, which was designed by leading Perth architects, Coast WA.
“The project was a culmination of four years work,” Peter Doggett of Coast WA explains. “The brief was to find a block in the northern beaches of Perth that would accommodate a young family and their guests.
“The block had to be on the beach front and have spectacular ocean views from as much of the home as possible. This eventuated in an elevated corner block, which allows more exposure of the building to the views and consequently all the elements the Indian Ocean can muster.”
He said a major challenge was to optimise the view by an extensive use of glass, without abandoning solar passive principles. “The proximity to breaking surf, just 50 metres away, and the strength and duration of prevailing winds meant the specification had to be uncompromising.”
“Another challenge was to design a continuous roof with as few penetrations, interruptions and changes of direction as possible.”
Lysaght Custom Orb profile cladding in corrosion-resistant Colorbond Stainless steel was used for the home’s sprung curved roof. Lysaght Custom Orb is the classic corrugated profile, equally at home with traditional and contemporary design.
Roger Piggott of Oswald Homes says quality and support were key factors in the decision to use BlueScope Lysaght products. “We were very happy with the quality of the material supplied by BlueScope Lysaght and by the support they provided,” he says.
“They provided a wealth of technical information regarding rolled and sprung roofs and the various grades of steel roof sheeting available, together with all related performance standards. This was very helpful in designing and installing the building’s roof.”
Peter Doggett agrees. “We selected Lysaght Custom Orb in Colorbond Stainless because, as a sprung curved roof it provided continuous lengths spanning gutter to gutter, and the softly curving roof generates the least amount of disturbance to the coastline in both a physical and aesthetic sense. The use of this material was critical to the success of the building.
“This has been my most rewarding project to date,” he adds. “And my client’s enjoyment and pleasure in their new home is a large part of that reward.”
