Quay makes a splash
A $5m retail development at Mandurah, WA, is making waves with its blend of old world market stalls, waterfront eateries and boardwalks. Dolphin Quay, situated in the Mandurah Ocean Marina, 72 km south of Perth, was designed by John Silbert and Associates.
According to Silbert the client’s initial brief was that the structure should encapsulate the essence of an old railway station or barn, however, “as the design progressed, we decided to relate the structure to its marine environs as well so we added a maritime feel, evoked by porthole windows and the wave canopy that surrounds the building. In fact at night, due to the bud lighting that we’ve installed around the roof and the wave canopy the complex looks like a ship at sea.”
The unusual shape of the wave canopy made selecting the right material an important issue. In the end Silbert selected Lysaght Custom Blue Or in Woodland Grey Colorbond STEEL. “While we were documenting the building we got BlueScope Lysaght to make a sample of the canopy from a 6m sheet of Custom Blue Orb to test that it could handle the triple curve of the wave. It worked extremely well,” he says.
A traditional corrugated roofing profile from BlueScope Steel , Lysaght Custom Blue Orb is designed especially for curving. Its extra ductility allows for easy and tight curving, without distortion, making it perfect for bullnose verandahs and curved roofing and walling in industrial, commercial and residential applications.
Meanwhile, natural steel cladding was selected for the market stall walls, with each clad in Lysaght Mini Orb in Zincalume steel. “We selected Mini Orb because we wanted to maintain the industrial, warehouse feel in the market place,” says Silbert. “We’ve also used Mini Orb across the façade of the mezzanine office section.”
