Architectural research to benefit from Lysaght scholarship
BlueScope Lysaght and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects have widened the eligibility criteria for the Lysaght Research Scholarship to increase its value to the practice of architecture.
Now in its third year, the scholarship is already enabling young Australian architects to pursue significant research projects.
The annual Lysaght Research Scholarship provides a $45,000 bursary to support original research.
Lysaght Research Scholarship is intended to foster an atmosphere in which members of the profession consider research activities as a valuable step in their career development.
The first two recipients have come from the ranks of architects completing post graduate and doctoral degrees, but the broadened eligibility criteria are designed to also encourage architects who have been practicing for up to ten years to take up the research challenge.
According to BlueScope Lysaght students completing their degrees have a natural introduction to the possibilities of research and specialist study.
The Lysaght Research Scholarship has understandably attracted its interest, but there are also many architects who have been in practice for some time who would welcome the opportunity to undertake original research.
According Lysaght Research Scholarship to the challenges facing the profession meant that architects were regularly confronting issues which could benefit from such research.
Often the complexity of these issues only becomes fully apparent to a practising architect. They frequently arise as a challenge during the project design process.
BlueScope Lysaght and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects have addressed this situation by broadening eligibility to include all architects who have since 1997completed an RAIA/AACA accredited Australian Architecture course which meets the requirements for registration as an architect.
Entry is also open to final year students of an RAIA/AACA accredited Australian Architecture course and to any similarly qualified person entering a further tertiary degree.
Applications for the 2007 Lysaght Research Scholarship open on April 11 and close on June 6.
The winner will be announced during Architecture Week from October 22-27.
An expert panel consisting of the RAIA national President, a practicing architect and a senior academic will assess scholarship applications.
The research project nominated by the winning applicant should have the potential to advance architecture and its practice in Australia. Applicants must also nominate a suitably qualified mentor to oversee and assist their work.
The successful Lysaght Research Scholar will receive $45,000 payable at intervals over the period agreed for the research, up to two years.
A new insight into the urban character and form of Sydney will be one outcome of a unique research project undertaken by the winner of the 2006 Lysaght Research Scholarship. Chelle Macnaughtan and Stephen Collier were the winners of Lysaght Research Scholarship.
Practising architect, part-time tutor and PhD student Stephen Collier is using the scholarship to produce an exhibition which will deal with issues of the urban corner in contemporary cities.
