BVN Architecture recently won three awards and a commendation at the ACT Institute of Architects' annual Architecture Awards held 2 June 2012.

The Interior Architecture category was given to the Belconnen Police Station which judges found 'successfully organises its functions from public to private domain, from general to more specialised work zones and from low to high security in a tight and rational linear arrangement.'

BVN's material selection of rugged materials including steel framing and brickwork 'is contrasted with the warm natural tones of timber in flooring, decking and plywood, resulting in a series of finely orchestrated and robust interiors.'

In the Public Architecture category, BVN received an award for their design of the Gym at HMAS Creswell, Jervis Bay which demonstrates skills in addressing many components of contemporary architecture.

The project requirement was successfully executed by BVN, with the judges noting with 'an imaginative resolution of siting, planning and landscape, structural simplicity with a fair bit of style and confident but creative detailing.

The award for Small Project Architecture was given to the Survival at Sea Facility, The Waterfront that houses a classroom for hands on learning and tea making areas alongside lots of hot shower facilities. BVN was chosen due to its use of limited materials palette of white painted boarding, timber decking and gabled steel roof ties resulted in 'a self-assured contemporary response to its established heritage context.'

BVN also received a commendation in the Heritage category for another of the HMAS Creswell projects, the conservation of Cerberus House and the rebuilding of Geelong House, incorporating teaching facilities including a large auditorium.

BVN was commended for their sensitive and understated intervention and for reinstating the dignity of the quarterback parade ground.

"It is possible to reach a high level of design excellence whilst still meeting the Defence requirements of robust, cost effective buildings," noted Abbie Galvin, BVN Principal responsible for the HMAS Creswell.

"These facilities are the workplaces and training grounds for the current and next generation of Defence personnel and it is important that they incorporate innovative and advanced thinking to support these functions."

BVN received awards and commendations for all four projects that they entered into the ACT Architecture Awards. The three award winning projects will now be included on the shortlist for the National Architecture Awards that will be announced in late October.
