Foamular is a very popular material used widely in the building industry for its superior insulation ability.
Foamular is also well known in the model making industry with its lightweight nature, compressive strength and ability to be carved and sculpted making the extruded polystyrene a perfect option for this application. Extruded polystyrene is a closed cell board with high rigidity, helping it maintain its integrity even when carved.
Foamular has already been used extensively in this industry and the trend is likely to continue, including model railways, model boats, surf boards, architectural modelling sculptures and table top games.
John Montgomery, a loyal Foamular customer has been working with the insulation material for around 15 years, and couldn’t be happier with the product. With around 40 years of experience in the field, he has become a specialist in selecting the right material. John specialises in model railways and started out by using wood as the basis for his layouts. He quickly converted to Foamular, which proved to be much more efficient during the construction of the display. He says he ‘started with Foamular in the mid-1990s and hasn’t looked back since’. Apart from its compressive strength, John is impressed with its lightweight design.
John teamed up with friend Geoff Nott for their latest piece titled the ‘Charging Moose Model Railway’. The layout was constructed from start to finish in nine months.
Extruded polystyrene sheets 25-100 mm thick can be cut and shaped into nearly any form or dimension. Boards can also be easily glued together with a polystyrene compatible adhesive to make thicknesses greater than 100mm.
Boards can be transformed into a variety of shapes using conventional woodworking tools, creating realistic mountains, buildings, valleys and scenery.
