Project Qatar 2008 has showcased a range of innovative green products, including the absorption and storage of storm water.
The storm water storage technology, which was introduced in the UAE, will soon be launched in Qatar, said Stephen Herd, International business development manager of Atlantis Water Management .
The Turf Cell, that will be used to capture the surface water, can hold 200 litres of runaway surface water per minute and can hold 70 tonnes per square meter through the 30mm drainage cell.
A 52mm product can hold 140 tones per square metre. The project can be implemented in open areas, road basements and on concrete steps, Stephen Herd told The Peninsula.
The water thus recaptured can be re-used or can be converted to re-charge aquifers. A few companies in Qatar, including a real estate major, have approached Atlantis Water Management to launch the storm water absorption technology in their project.
"We have launched our rain water re-use project a few years ago at Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). This is the first time we are launching the innovative storm water absorption", he said.
Recharging of natural aquifers, reduction of heat retention of buildings, preservation of natural waterways and transformation of carbon dioxide are other products of Atlantis Water Management.
In QSTP, Atlantis Water Management has installed a total of 185 containers and an estimated 240,000 litres of rain water is being stored and re-used in a single container.
