A sports field drainage system from Atlantis Water Management designed to capture irrigated water has been recommended by Humberto Urriola for a new sports stadium in the Middle East.

Humberto Urriola offers his 40 years of experience in designing sustainable sports fields and environmental solutions.

Farzad Farshid, a contractor for a new sports stadium coming up in the Middle East consulted with Humberto Urriola about a suitable technology that would help them capture, store and reuse the irrigated water.

The intent was to capture as much of the irrigated water as possible for reuse on the sports field and surrounding landscaped areas. They were also considering installing underground water tanks in and around the project to harvest this water.

The contractor required a solution that would work in a hot and arid climate.

Humberto Urriola says that designing sports fields in the Middle East can be complicated due to the harsh environment and extreme temperatures. He recommends water management solutions from Atlantis based on their 35-year experience in sports fields and other environmental areas.

He adds that proven water management systems from Atlantis have made it possible to achieve exceptional results in a sustainable way.

Atlantis’ water management system works extremely well in either wet or arid climates as it eliminates soil saturation and soil dryness – two unfavourable factors in sports field design.

Moving water through horizontal surfaces is another difficult challenge in water management as water needs to be managed by gravity.

Sports field design faces key challenges depending on the environment. Water conservation is the primary concern in hot, arid countries while the primary focus is the removal of excessive water in wet, European countries.

Both of these scenarios have been solved by Atlantis water management systems with ease. Atlantis supports designers and installers when required to overcome some of these challenges.

The Atlantis drainage system is one such innovative solution in sports field management.

Key features of the sports field drainage system include:

  • Creates a constant sub-surface aerobic water table in suspension known as a perched water table
  • Consistent water supply is maintained below the surface in dry weather
  • The perch remains at a constant level below the surface even in a heavy storm
  • Continual water supply and beneficial subsoil ventilation in the drainage system results in excellent turf colour, a healthy root system and more resilient turf

Atlantis sportsfield drainage systems facilitate quicker wear recovery and maintain healthier turf all year by combining a high-growth root zone environment with rapid drainage rates and increased moisture retention.

Atlantis also provides turnkey solutions in various challenging areas in collaboration with strategic partners. Total solutions are provided for sports fields, golf courses, green roofs and large-scale landscaped areas.

In addition to sustainable sports fields, Atlantis technology has been used extensively in roof gardens, green vertical walls, ecological streets and podium landscaped areas very successfully.

Humberto Urriola is a landscape architect, industrial designer and the inventor of the Atlantis Subsurface Infiltration and Rainwater Harvesting Tank.

He is the driving force behind the green city design that is becoming a reality in places like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha in the Middle East.
