Understanding tiles - inside out
The art of transforming the floor into the perfect canvas for furnishings, lifestyles and colour preferences can be complex but is definitely achievable if a few simple rules are followed.
Neutral colour tones obviously give a great scope for the use of colour and texture in other finishes while ceramic tiles provide a practical surface in terms of low maintenance and good wear properties.
Aesthetically, large format tiles (the larger the better) create the perception of more space – be it indoors or out – and also have the ability to make quite separate areas flow into each other, especially when similar looking tiles are used in an indoor area leading to a courtyard, patio or terrace for example.
The home featured achieved just this by using a beautiful travertine lookalike – Amber’s Travertino Bernini – inside and Amber’s Newstone hand-made concrete pavers in Terrain Alpine on the outdoor terrace and pool surround.
Travertino Bernini is a full-bodied porcelain that features a realistic, classic vein cut that travertine is renowned for in a soft beige with a slight pitted texture. The strength and durability of this bold 450x900mm tile makes it suitable for both residential and commercial
installations.
The large format is also a great plus – it reduces the number of grout lines required and so makes the entire area look bigger.
Newstone is the beautiful hand-made concrete paver available in two sizes, the 400x400mm square format and the 600x400mm rectangle that is used on the terrace and pool surround of the home featured.
The paver is available in the colour used here - a bleached beige called Alpine – plus six other earthy hues – Beige, Nero, Sands, Outback, Mocha and Nero.
Each colour is available in two finishes – the textured, almost fossilised surface of Terrain and the smoother velveteen surface of Satin. Matching bullnoses are available in each colour and finish.
Both finishes are available from Amber outlets throughout NSW, QLD and ACT. Step treads measuring 450x300mm are also available in this finish.
