Caleffi Tempering Valve - safe hot water
Hot water can cause serious burns and, unfortunately, the most vulnerable are children, the aged and the infirm. The actual temperature of the hot water supply is extremely important. At 60°C, it takes one second for hot water to cause third degree burns. At 50°C, it takes five minutes. Ten degrees difference in temperature may seem insignificant, but it can result in hospitalisation, skin grafts and scarring for life. Over 400* children in Australia are hospitalised each year as the result of scalding (*NSW Health hot water burns publication).
Legislation is now in place throughout Australia for safe temperature hot water to be supplied to hot water outlets in the ablution areas of buildings. The idea of mixing valves is to supply water at a set temperature. For domestic situations, tempering valves are to be installed and set at a maximum of 50° and are required to maintain the set temperature of the mixed water to within 3°C+/-. In buildings such as early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools, hospitals, nursing homes and similar facilities for young, aged, sick or disabled persons, the temperature of the hot water must be controlled with a Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV) and set to a maximum of 43.5°C.
