Lockwood locks - ASSA ABLOY’s flagship brand
The Lockwood manufacturing plant in the Melbourne suburb of Oakleigh is a classic example of the speed of change accelerating as time goes on. Between the 1930’s and the 1990’s, very little changed for the company’s hundreds of employees apart from the company’s ownership.
From founding company, Ogden Industries, ownership passed to the Adelaide Steamship Company, National Consolidated Limited, Smith’s Industries Australia Pty Limited and Email Limited. In 1999, the world’s leading lock group, ASSA ABLOY bought a 50% share of Lockwood Australia and formed a new entity, Lockwood Security Products Pty Limited.
From there, the winds of change swept through the lock manufacturer as it was embraced by a group of companies that shared its passion for producing quality locking solutions, and a vision to benchmark industry standards worldwide.
After ASSA ABLOY assumed full ownership of Lockwood, the cultural change continued. Best practice was introduced, the manufacturing plants at both Sherwood and Oakleigh were modernised, ground-breaking enterprise agreements were reached and an innovative new environmental waste treatment plant was installed.
In January 2005, Lockwood Security Products formally became ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty. Limited. Lockwood remains ASSA ABLOY’s flagship brand and, as such, benefits from the entire group’s global resources and technological innovations.
The final instalment in this chapter of this remarkable story will happen on 30 August this year, when employees celebrate the opening of the $16 million redevelopment of the 5.4 hectare Oakleigh site, which secures the future of Australia’s leading lock manufacturer here in Australia (at a time when so many manufacturers are moving offshore) and the jobs of hundreds of employees.
