Buildings with flat roofs often use white gravel for insulation purposes. While this is an effective method to insulate a building, large birds such as Ravens and Sulphur Crested Cockatoos find the gravel interesting and will often pick it up and drop it off the edge of the buildings.
This not only poses a safety concern for people, it also can effect the building and its facades.
The KPMG building in Sydney had to replace two $24k plate glass awnings because Ravens were dropping the gravel stones over the edge of the building.ANC Bird Control installed a white 19mm diamond netting in a double layered configuration as a low profile bird deterrent. This was placed directly on top of the gravel.
Additionally, ANC Bird Control has installed a 50mm premier net with solar powered Shock Track to the roof of a building on Anzac Parade in Kensington.
A gravel roof top in Meadowbank used an Electric Shock Track powered from a M2 (mains) Energiser with the lead out wire hidden under the gravel to deter their problem birds.
In every instance where a bird deterrent system has been installed to prevent birds from dropping gravel off buildings it has been successful.
